Many
have an impression that Hyderabad in many ways is
a right place to buy the handicrafts. This is because,
the city besides showcasing the crafts of our own
state, also exhibits traditional crafts of other
states. If Lepakshi displays the crafts of Andhra
Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir Cottage Emporium displays
the crafts of Kashmir, it is Gurjari, a widely known
name in this handicraft market which showcases the
popular arty crafts of Gujarat.
Right
from its inception, Gurjari is catering to the needs
of those who want the Gujarati crafts to be adorned
in their homes . The showroom is one of the showrooms
of Gujarat State Handicrafts Development Corporation
(GSHDC), which was instituted by the
Gujarat Government in 1976 with an objective to
help the craftsmen of Gujarat State. "Gurjari
is undoubtedly an unique experiment of blending
ethnic charm with contemporary trends, which is
realised after the resolute effort put by the State
Government of Gujarat," says Wasim Mallik,
in-charge of Gurjari, Hyderabad. "After
seeing the public interest towards the Gujarat crafts
in many craft exhibitions, GSHDC has decided to
open 'Gurjari' outlet in Hyderabad city in 1991,"
he says.
A
spacious showroom in the first floor of Hotel Sarovar
Complex, Opp A.P. State Secretariat, Gurjari has
already found a much loved place among the people
of twin cities. From a typical Gujarati soft toy
puppet to exquisite Sankela furniture ranging between
Rs. 16 and Rs. 30,000, Gurjari houses everything,
the discerning buyer would wish to admire and acquire.
Besides
Hyderabad, GSHDC also has branches at Ahmedabad,
Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Calcutta and
Lucknow, which are named as Gurjari everywhere.
The corporation purchases all kinds of crafts made
by various traditional groups living across the
Gujarat state and allocate them to all Gurjari outlets
in the country, which will be sold out by the outlets
for a minimal price. "Gurjari not only acts
as a catlayst in the socio economic upliftment of
the craftsmen of Gujarat but also provides an opportunity
to the people to buy the Gujarati crafts in their
respective cities," says Wasim.
There
are many aesthetically made handicrafts and handlooms
housed in Gurjari which reflect the artistic craftsmanship
of Gujarat. Sankhela furniture, Jute furniture,
White metal doors, Jewellery boxes, Pen holders,
Letter holders, Bajoths, Jute Chair and stools,
Cloth ladder holder, file folder, Stuff toys, Puppets,
brass chains, Dhamadka dress material, vegetable
dyes, dress material and bedsheets, boutique print,
Bandhani, Printed bedsheets, Arya embroidery Dowan
set, Woolen Zaris, Patchwork quilt, Kabira work
quilt, old embroidery wall hangings, Aryan embroidery
hangings, Old embroidery and Aryan embroidery thorans,
Patchwork cushion covers and embroidery cushion
covers are some of them.
