After
introducing economic reforms, multinational companies
(MNCs) extended their operations into India in a
big way. Most of the automobile giants like Deawoo,
Hyundai and Toyota have brought their
technology and funds to establish joint ventures
in our country to reap the benefits of economic
reforms. Indian automobile conglomerates like Mahindra
and Mahindra, Telco, Bajaj, Hero Honda joined
the race and launched similar brands
on par with the products of MNCs. Due to
this, the automobile industry has become one of
the fastest growing sectors in India in recent years.
With the growing volume of the vehicles on Indian
roads, the demand for spare parts, tyres and tubes
is also increasing rapidly. Mr. Shiv Shankar
Agarwal, observed the developments and ventured
into the manufacturing of automobile tubes to go
with the trend.
He established Pelican Rubber Private Limited
in 1995. Before the inception of Pelican, Mr Agarwal
was actively engaged in the trading of tyres
and tubes for nearly three decades. "This
experience was put to practice to set-up Pelican.
We started commercial production activities in 1996
and our products have been marketed under 'Avon'
brand name. Our brand equity is on the steady rise.
In the short period of four years we have increased
the capacity of our plant to 12 million tubes per
year. Now (2001) 'Avon' tubes have achieved a healthy
20 percent of the market share," explained
Mr. Kapil Agarwal, Director Finance, Pelican Rubbers.
Pelican
produces all types of Butyl tubes for cars, trucks
and two wheelers. The company has the credibility
of bagging bulk supply orders from Road Transport
Corporations of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka,
Gujarat, Delhi, Haryana and Sikkim.
"We are directly engaged in exporting our
products to Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Bolivia,
Costarica, Ecuador, France, Italy, Malaysia, Malta,
Netherlands, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sweden,
Sri Lanka, Turkey and USA. 40 per cent
of our products are exported to these countries.
We received the best exporter of tubes awards in
1996-97 and in 1998-99," said Mr. Kapil
with pride.
"We
take up bulk orders from the customers to supply
automobile tubes with their brands or logos. Any
new size of tubes and valves as per customer's requirements
can be provided on bulk orders," said Kapil.
The success of Pelican evidently goes to its quality
products. Pelican is an ISO-9002 company
certified by DNV certification BV, The Netherlands.
