CHANGING TRADITION INTO FASHION
 |
Wearing
traditional clothes has become a fashion today. From businessman
to students, everyone wants to appear themselves either
in a kurta pyjama or a Jodhpuri. Whether it is a marriage
function or a birthday party, wearing traditional clothes
has become a norm of the day. It looks that the present
generation has moulded tradition into a fashion. And why
not? Traditional clothes like Jodhpuri, kurta- pyjama,
sherwani, pathani suit and coat- pant not only look stylish
but also add an extra glamour. One showroom which is excelling
in these kind of garments is Maqdoom Bros located
in Charminar.
Started
in 1897 by Khaja Moinuddin Hussami, a migrant from
Afghanistan, Maqdoom Bros is a first ready-made garments
showroom of the city. Spread across 5000 square feet in
Charminar area, Maqdoom Bros has been serving the needs
of the people since more than a century. From the last
Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan to the former
police commissioner Sukumar, everyone sported Maqdoom
Bros dresses. With its wide range of garments, it created
an indelible mark over its customers. Says Faiz of Maqdoom
Bros "We have a wide range of kurta pyjamas, pathani
dresses, sherwani, Jodhpuri, coat pant, jacket, burqa,
ghagra choli and dupatta which are manufactured in our
manufacturing unit located next to our showroom."
Maqdoom
Bros clothes are not only famous in the city but also
in the foreign countries. The NRI's who are spread across
the globe form one of their primary customers. With its
stylish traditional garments, Maqdoom Bros caters to the
needs of NRI's who are still entangled with the Indian
dress culture. "We export our garments to US,
UK, middle east and far east. Very soon, we will be opening
an exclusive Maqdoom Bros outlet in Chicago,"
says Faiz.
Faiz, second youngest of the four brothers who run this
showroom feels that films and TV serials have also contributed
for the popularity of traditional garments. Yes indeed!
We have seen Big B in Mohabbatein wearing a sherwani
and commanding his students to stick to the traditional
rules. And Don't forget Shahrukh Khan and Akshay
Kumar who are often seen in the films dressed in a
kurta pyjama and sherwani.
But
how are the prices? It is the only fair price shop
in Hyderabad with every single product written with a
fixed price, and the price of the garments ranges
from Rs 250 - Rs 10,000. The kurta pyjama with chadaw
shoes which is in great demand nowadays costs Rs.3600
and the sherwani with jacket costs Rs 5600, says Faiz.
Is there any unique thing about Maqdoom Bros garments?
The garments of Maqdoom Bros have their own speciality.
One of the striking feature of Maqdoom Bros garments is
the beautiful embroidery and the five threaded stitching.
"We use computers and machines for designing our
clothes. And the five threaded stitching is an unique
feature of our clothes. The garments are designed
by Hamid Mohiuddin from NIFT (National Institute of Fashion
Technology)," says Faiz sitting in his spacious
showroom in the old city.
That's Maqdoom Bros - for the people who chant apni
tehzeeb apna libaaz!
