Once
upon a time, the words Alladin and Genie
belonged to the mystical and magical fairy tale
world of the Arabian nights. But, not anymore. Like
in a modern-day Shakespere movie, the words now
have an entirely new meaning. Forget the Arabian
nights, we're talking about the digital world of
the Internet, and Alladinand Genieare not characters
but ISP products. The master storyteller here is
none other than city based Internet Service Provider
(ISP), Pioneer Networks.
Presenting Alladin - A Readymade ISP Solution
After a year of brainstorming and research,
Pioneer Networks, an ISP company that operates in
Hyderabad, Guntur, Vizag and Amritsar, came up with
a product in January 2000, that integrates ten different
types of hardware and software. In a puff of smoke,
Alladin was born! An ISP in a box, Alladin
presented a breakthrough solution to all the hassles
users are facing while connecting to the net . Alladin
comes packed with all the servers in a single rack
and with all the right configurations in place even
before it can be moved to the project site. A fully
automatic system, it can be easily operated by just
one person. Size simply doesn't matter as Alladin
can match the performance of large ISPs in terms
of reliability and speed. Besides, it costs 50%
lesser than a conventional ISP.
This ready-to-use product is built on a Linux
platform using building blocks from Intel's
advanced server architecture and comes with
the required software modules like online registration
module, real time billing software, web based e-mail
solution, ISP accounting software, temp ID generation
module and plenty more.
And the Genie?
The genie is an improved version of Alladin
that will be launched in November in Andhra Pradesh
and Karnataka. The Genie is even smaller than Alladin
and according to Pioneer's Managing Director
P Sreedhar Reddy, " Each box can provide
access to 600 subscribers". The Genie too has
all the features of an ISP like a router, remote
access server, e-mail server and billing servers.
Both Alladin and Genie target hotels, apartments
and housing colonies. A hotel can therefore provide
net connection to its rooms without subscribing
to VSNL or any other ISP. As long as the hotel has
telephone lines it can easily install a Genie and
provide hassle free Internet access at 25 percent
of the cost. Yes, there is no digging for cables.
Pioneer Networks even plans to foray into neighbouring
countries to tap the hotel industry.
Meanwhile, the company is focussing on its R&D to
create improved versions and is even expecting financial
support from a yet-to-be announced funding agency.
Wonder what it'll be next? Ali Baba or Sindabad?
