The
e-mail service, a product of the Internet revolution,
facilitates exchange of messages fast and at a cheaper
rate. As the e-mail service was developed in the west,
we were all forced to use the default language (i.e.,
English). We Indians, generally use English as a bridge
language in official communication and in conversations
with people from other parts of the country or the world.
But, when it comes to communicating with our family members
and our close friends, we generally prefer our mother
tongue. Personal feelings can be expressed effectively
in no other language than our mother tongue. Mithi.com
unveiled a software application Mailjol Unplugged,
for those who like to send their e-mails in Indian languages.
Mithi.com,
a Pune-based software products development company,
launched mailjol Unplugged 2.0 in Hyderabad on
19 February 2001. Speaking on the occasion Mr. Ashok,
Vice President of Mithi said, "We launched our
free e-mail service (mailjol.com) in Indian languages
in Hyderabad eight months ago. Now the service is used
by 1,10, 000 users world-wide. We are happy to disclose
the fact that among all the Indian language users at 'mailjol',
22% are Telugu people. We want to convey our sincere gratitude
to the Telugu people by launching the 'mailjol Unplugged'
e-mail client software in Hyderabad."
'Mailjol Unplugged' works both as a companion to popular
e-mail software on the personal computer and also as a
stand alone e-mail software. It enables users to send
and receive e-mails in English as well as 11 other Indian
languages using any Post Office Protocol (POP) e-mail
account. By using this software, you can send and
receive e-mail messages in Assamese, Bengali, English,
Gujarati, Kannada, Hindi, Marathi, Malayalam, Punjabi,
Oriya, Tamil and Telugu.
"There
are some online e-mail services, which facilitate sending
of e-mails in Indian languages. The frequent disconnections,
low bandwidth and problems in telephone lines made the
e-mail service costlier. The first of it's kind, this
e-mail software, 'mailjol Unplugged' eliminates the need
to stay connected to the web while working with e-mail,
much like the popular e-mail softwares like Outlook
Express for English. This reduces the telephone charges
and lowers the usage of Internet connect time. 'Mailjol
Unplugged' is a offline e-mail client, which allows you
to write and save e-mails in English and 11 other Indian
languages. The software sends the saved messages once
you connect to the Internet. It also receives all yours
mails and saves in the 'inbox'. When the sending and receiving
of mails finishes, you can disconnect the net saving your
Internet time and telephone charges," said Deepak
Moti Ramani, of Mithi.
The
software aims to cut down the cost of sending e-mails
in Indian languages for frequent users in local languages.
The company expects the products to become popular amongst
news correspondents, journalists, marketing and
customer support executives, individuals conversing
with their family and friends across cities, governmental
and non-governmental agencies (NGOs). "We are
looking forward for tie ups with multinationals like Hindustan
Lever, Colgate Palmolive to receive consumer feedback
from rural India. This will be useful to the clients to
analyse and assess consumer psychology to position their
brands in the right place," explained Ashok.
Like Outlook Express, Mailjol Unplugged can be used by
any number of users. Each one of your family members can
create an e-mail address with separate password protection.
The software sends and receives all the mails when the
net is connected. This e-mail client is compatible with
all types of present and future softwares.
"The
mails sent from mailjol unplugged in Indian languages
can be read by all the users world over, irrespective
of the e-mail service they are using. They need not download
the related software. One more important feature of this
software is that it provides tips on how to type a particular
language. Onscreen help and keyboard assistance for all
the languages are also available. If you don't know the
character but you can speak that language, even then you
can send mails in that language. You simply type the words
as how they are spoken using English characters, the software
takes care of typing the words in the desired language,"
said Ashok.
By using the enormous capacity of the PC to store and
process information, 'Mailjol Unplugged' provides a rich
environment for users to communicate in local languages
on the Internet. Priced at Rs. 1500, the software
will be available all over India through all computer
retail stores.
