FOR A BETTER PC EXPERIENCE

On September 21, 2000, Microsoft India launched the millennium edition of its operating system, Windows ME (ME stands for Millennium Edition). A take off on Windows 98, ME targets the Home PC Users and specially aims to bridge the gap between PC users and the Internet. Windows ME will be the last operating system based on Windows 98.

Salient features of Windows ME

Multimedia

The most significant addition is the inclusion of new drivers and new compression technology that simplifies the process of importing and editing of digital images. Using technology that is typical high-end video-editing software, Windows Movie Maker, splits the video (that is captured from a digital camera or imported) into clips. Videos can be imported from all existing formats except Real Media, but can be output only in Windows Media format, not avi or mpeg. The Windows Image Acquisition uses a wizard interface for previewing, creating and managing images from scanners and digital still cameras. Windows ME also comes with a new Windows Media Player 7 that functions as a jukebox, besides playing and storing music files. It works with most standard audio and video formats.

Better Online Experience

With the aim to enhance the users online experience, Windows ME has incorporated Internet features into more applications. Thus MSN Messenger is integrated with Outlook Express (Version 5.5). The OS also includes Internet Explorer 5.5. The idea is to build a platform for increased online participation of PC users. Another feature of Windows ME is the removal of the option to restart or boot to the MS DOS command. The help system has been vastly improved, while error messages are more informative. Other important features include a better System Restore Wizard and System File Protection.

System Requirements

The system requirements are a 32 MB RAM, 320 MB hard drive.

According to Microsoft Hyderabad, the shipment of Windows ME to Hyderabad will begin in October and the product will be available in two weeks time. The approximate cost is Rs. 5500.
