Library. Modelled on the pattern of British
public libraries, the library located on Secretariat
Road provides the best of reading materials published
in Britain. From accessing the World Wide Web
to aiding the development of children with multimedia,
the library has a wide range of services set to
the highest professional standards.
Established
in 1979, The British Library is part of a network
of thirteen libraries in India. It is funded by
the British Council Division and jointly managed
by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations.
The libraries in the network aim to promote partnership
between Britain and India by providing information
through books and other services. The library
has about 30, 000 latest books on a variety of
subjects, 100 periodicals, 350 training videos
and 150 CDs, in disciplines such as management,
technology, economics, advertising, journalism,
health and medicine, engineering, and literature.
There is also a good collection of novels, biographies
and newspapers in the library. The stocks and
services of the library are directed mainly towards
professionals and postgraduate students. However,
the membership is open to anyone.
British

Apart

UK. The library has Educational Counselling Service
which provides complete Information about British
education system. The library also conducts seminars
and education fairs from time to time. UK
education fair held in February was a huge
hit in the city. "The UK welcomes students
from India to mix with a growing community of
nearly 800,000 international students currently
staying there. Our endeavour is to encourage more
students from India to pursue higher education
in UK" said Sudhakar Goud, Manager
of British Library.
The
British Council has recently launched IT Learning
Resource Centres (ITLRC) all across the country.
"This is in response to the ever-growing
need and interest in the field of IT learning.
These IT Centres are part of a drive to ensure
that British Council libraries stay in tune with
the needs of our 100,000 members," said
Sudhakar Goud. The IT Learning Resource Centre
will have over 2000 of the latest books and periodicals
on Computers, Information and Communication Technology
and IT applications in various fields. Also available
at the Centre will be CDs, tutorials, learning
packages and information about IT education and
Internet facility. Departing from the Council’s
policy of focusing on British books and periodicals,
the ITLRC will have materials brought out in other
countries too, including a good number of books
and periodicals published from India.
Lending services of British Library
4 books and 2 periodicals are lent out to individual
members for a period of three weeks. 20 books
and 10 periodicals are lent out to institutional
members for a period of three weeks and two educational
videos for a period of one week.
Fees for becoming members: Individuals:
500 rupees/annum. Institutions: 3500/annum
