Promoting Medical Careers
The Gandhi Medical College was started in 1954
under the auspices of a private body called the Anwar-Ul-Loom
Educational Society then called the Peoples Medical
College. In 1955, it was renamed as the Gandhi
Medical College and the institute was handed over
to Government of Hyderabad in July 1956 and shifted
to Basheerbagh. Dr. D. V. Subba Reddy, Professor
of Medicine, Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad
was then appointed as the first, Principal of Gandhi
Medical College.
Today the college has well equipped laboratories, museum
for each of pre-clinical departments and para - clinical
department. It also has a separate central photography
section with the necessary equipment for audio-visual
teaching purpose.The first batch of M.B.B.S. students
was admitted in the Year 1954 with the intake capacity
of 40. Every Year 150 students are admitted in to M.B.B.S.
There are five lecture halls in the college and two
in the hospital, well equipped with audio - visual aids.
The college has an in- house auditorium with
a capacity of 350 to 400 persons and an open air theatre
with a built - in - dais. There is a big central library
with a large hall that stocks around 25,000 textbooks
and 3,218 journals. There are also four other reading
rooms available for staff and post graduates. The Library
functions from 9.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m.
The college offers very good hostel facilities for both
boys and girls.There is one boy's hostel with 250 seats
and one girl's hostel with 100 seats for undergraduate
students. Single seated rooms are provided for final year
students while the other rooms are shared between two
to three students. This college offers graduation, post
graduation and super speciality courses.
The students are admitted through the entrance test- EAMCET.
This institute is also involved in various research
activities. It is also associated with seven teaching
