School with a difference
In a country where education is equ ated
with examination performance, Sloka comes as
a breath of fresh air.
The curriculum mirrors the inner development of the
child thereby making education more relevant and satisfactory.
Children at Sloka are encouraged to play in the garden,
learning from Mother Nature. Even before the
school was set up, Sloka initiated the Teacher's
Training Programme, where the teachers were taught
early childhood education, art, music and craft. The
faculty at Sloka comprises of two teachers from Holland
and a host of other guest teachers from India and abroad.
The school was launched in 1997, by the Education
Renaissance Trust, as a pilot project and is Hyderabad's
first Whaldrof School. Sloka is part of the worldwide
network of Steiner Schools.
Located amidst the rocks of Banjara Hills, 98
children receive their training in languages, numbers,
work and art. The education pattern at Sloka differs
greatly from the ordinary schools. Sloka has seven teachers
for three nursery groups, two kindergartens
and Class 1 and Class 2. Two parents
are in-charge of the library and look after the office.
They also interact with the other parents.
After
Grade VIII the class teacher gives way to the teacher
specialists who lead the students through a rich and
varied array of main lessons from Astro Physics to
works of Keats, and from History to Modern
Algebra. Every year, the students bring out a book
of their own songs and music titled Songbirds.
Nothing best describes the result of Sloka's unconventional
efforts than the lyrics of this song, found in their music
book: ' Glorious the sun does rise, bringing us the
day
By a peaceful nights embrace, we are filled with
love and grace
Welcoming the day, graceful hearts hence glad and strong,
all day long.'
