The Central Institute of English and Foreign
Languages is an internationally acclaimed centre for
higher education with the standing of a university for
the past 25 years. Spread over an area of about 35 acres
of land in lush green surroundings, the university is
the only one of its kind giving advanced research and
training in English and foreign languages.
CIEFL, as it is popularly known, is located in the heart
of the city well connected by road. It is about 10 km
from the Hyderabad airport and 4 km from the Secunderabad
railway station. It even has institutes at Hanoi, Vietnam
and in Mongolia, which impart training in English.
Ample facilities like a well-equipped library with over
120,000 books and 470 journals, an educational media research
centre for the production of educational videos, language
laboratories, and audio and video recording units. In
addition to this, modernity in education, use of computers,
Internet access, printing presses are at one's disposal.
The hospitality division takes good care of the visitors
and the parents. The institute offers hostels for men
and women, an international guesthouse, a health care
centre, staff quarters, a cafeteria and a crèche.
INTERNATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAMMES
Courses offered
1) Advanced communication skills in English for senior
professionals.
Eligibility: Senior professionals in government
and industry with a fairly high degree of proficiency
in English.
Duration: Five weeks
2) English for professionals
Eligibility: Training proferred in the usage
of English for a specific trade or profession.
Duration: 12-13 weeks.
The other important courses offered here are a course
in teaching English for Social Welfare Residential Schools,
an online teaching programme, a post-graduate diploma
in teaching English, etc. The foreign languages taught
here are German, French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic
and Japanese. Chinese and Hebrew shall
be added to the list very soon.
The teaching faculty here are experts in their respective
fields of study, methodology, spoken English skills,
phonetics and area studies programmes. The same is the
case with those who teach foreign languages.
The CIEFL has donated free space and free power to
the Indian Association for the Visually Handicapped,
which is headed by Professor Rajashekar.
An electronic reading centre for the blind has been
set up here in collaboration with Microsoft,
which is an eye opener for the sightless to walk into
the realms of those with vision.
The Vice Chancellor of CIEFL, Mr Pramod Talgeri,
who is a man of letters and a down-to-earth person,
believes that English is a gateway to the world. A man
with a flair for fine arts, Mr. Talgeri has been
instrumental in encouraging young budding artistes.
This has been done through the opening of a Concert
Hall for conducting painting exhibitions and enacting
of plays.
