The
University of Hyderabad is one of the premier universities
of postgraduate teaching and research in the country.
Established in 1974, by an Act of Parliament, it is wholly
funded by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
Located 20 kilometres from Hyderabad on the Old Hyderabad-
Bombay road, its campus sprawls over 2000 acres, dotted
with four lakes and exqusite rock formations. The landmark
'Golden Threshold', former residence of Sarojini Naidu,
is located here.
The University has eight schools of study that include
mathematics, physics, chemistry, life sciences, humanities,
social sciences and managements studies. The MBA programme
offered by the University is recognised by the All India
Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Also located
here is the Sarojini Naidu School of Performing Arts,
Fine Arts and Communication.
The student strength is 2000, of which 35 percent of students
are Ph.D. scholars. The Universitys' faculty include 71
professors, 86 readers and 42 lecturers, most of whom
have published research papers (3757 research papers)
in journals, authored books (496 books) over the last
20 years. They have also won many awards in their respective
fields. Many
of the research programmes are funded by national and
international funding agencies.
The University's Indira Gandhi Memorial Library has
the distinction of being the first university library
to computerise all its operations. The library has a collection
of 2,46,000 volumes, 711 periodicals, 50 popular magazines
and 25 newspapers. Other facilities include a computer
centre, campus accommodation, and a Health Centre which
also has a health insurance scheme. The University's Placement
and Counselling Centre offers advice on further studies
and prospective job offers.
