LEADING FROM DARKNESS TO LIGHT
The Osmania University was established in 1918.
It derives its name from its founder, Mir Osman Ali
Khan better known as Nizam
VII of the former Hyderabad. Due to a firman
(decree) by the ruler, Urdu was made the medium of instruction.
The university's jurisdiction extends over 60, 000 square
kilometres, covering a population of 20 million. With
500 colleges under it, the total student population is
around 250,000.
The
main campus is spread over an area of about 1200 acres
with seven colleges. The area includes Hyderabad, Mahaboobnagar,
Medak, Nalgonda, Nizamabad and Ranga Reddy in
the State of Andhra Pradesh. The campus is a landmark
in Hyderabad, and figures on any tourists' itinerary.
The university has 11 faculties and 60 departments offering
subjects
ranging from arts and social sciences to law, management,
communication and engineering. There are 15 specialised
centres that undertake research and offers consultancy
services. These specialised centres include Audio-visual
Research Centre, Centre for Energy Technology, Institute
of Genetics and Hospital for Genetic Diseases et
al.
The university also has a Centre for Distance Education,
that offers most of the graduate, post graduate and diploma
courses.
Research projects are funded by the University Grants
Commission, and other national agencies. The university
also has ties with government agencies, corporate units
and institutions abroad to strenghten its research activities.
Osmania University has excellent libraries, laboratories,
study rooms, boarding facilities for boys and girls, canteens,
auditoriums, and huge sports facilities.
True to its motto, the Osmania University has guided
