---------------------GOOD CINEMA FOR
ALL
Right from the day it was established on the 1st of
March 1974, the Hyderabad Film Club (HYFIC) has
been functioning to spread the word- that cinema not
only spells magic, it is meaningful too.
With Dr. G. S. Sidhu as its founder-president, the
HYFIC has been successfully working as an ambassador
of good cinema. It has in its fold a membership of not
only cinema lovers from all walks of life, but also
professional film makers, distributors and those connected
directly or indirectly with film-making and film screening.
The main activity of the film club is the regular screening
of good films, mostly at the preview theatre of Sarathy
Studios. On an average, members at Hyderabad get to
see four to six foreign and Indian films in a month.
Another exciting activity involves periodical retrospectives
and festivals. The HYFIC can be proud of retrospectives
of such luminaries as Godard, Zanussi, Ingmar Bergman,
Reinard Hauff, Bolognini, Niklos Schilling and Gerard
Depaprdieu. Of the Indian luminaries, the retrospectives
include Bimal Roy, Satyajit Ray, K.L.Saigal, Aravindan,
Buddhadeb Das Gupta and Girish Kasaravalli.
In 1982, the Hyderabad Film Club celebrated
the Silver Jubilee of Indian Talkies by holding a Festival
of Indian films where many rare classics were screened,
thanks to the Pune National Film Archives. The Egyptian,
Chinese, Israeli and other festivals helped Hyderabadi
viewers get a valuable feel of the films of those countries.
Lectures, discussions and seminars are the hallmark
of any film society.
HYFIC caters to the academic and intellectual
needs of its members by organising several seminars
like the one on Regional Cinema & Film Society Movement
and Ray Films. The HYFIC, actively engaged in
strengthening the film-society movement, hosted th All
India Film Societies Conference in 1983 and state-level
conferences of film societies in 1975, 1981, 1989, 1991,
1992 and 1993. It unfailingly brings out a monthly newsletter
that keeps the members well informed on various streams
of thoughts, perceptions and activities.
Not satisfied by just catering to the aesthetic need s
of its members, the Hyderabad Film Club misses
no opportunity to involve the masses. The Movie Mela
held from September 26 to October 10 1999 to mark the
club's silver jubilee was a month-long feast of films
made by master film makers from different countries
as well as various states of India. A roaring success,
it proved that a taste for good cinema can be developed
by one and all.

| ----------------------- Boon To children
The children of Hyderabad are indeed fortunate to have
an active Children's Film Society. It was formed
in 1992 with H.E. the Governor of Andhra Pradesh as
its chief patron.
Acknowledging the educative and entertaining aspects
of cinema, the Children's Film Society aims at
promoting cinematic and audio-visual literacy among
children so that they can learn to appreciate good films
and reject the bad ones. The Society tries to meet these
objectives by:
- Showing good Indian and foreign children's films.
- Getting affiliated with national and international
children's film societies.
- Encouraging existing children's film societies
and promoting new ones.
- Involving children in cinematic movements through
workshops, seminars and discussions.
- Bringing out books and other written material on
good films and good film culture.
- Organising major children's film festivals in Andhra
Pradesh.
The Children's Film Society regularly screens children's
films. Thanks to their efforts, the International Children's
Film Festival is now permanently held in Hyderabad every
alternate year. The Society has won laurels for conducting
Open Forums where national and international film personalities
interact with children. It also conducted a script writing
workshop and film appreciation courses.
It is partly due to the efforts of the Children's
Film Society that child film-lovers from Hyderabad
have done a wonderful job as members of the jury for
national as well as international film festivals.
