We
have seen organisations and institutions dedicatedly promoting
music. But what about organisations and institutions to
promote and take care of the musicians? There is one in
Hyderabad. Perhaps the only one. The Amateur and Professional
Singers Organisation (APSO). It is exclusively for
singers.
APSO came into being in 1996. Renowned play-back
singer
S. P. Bala Subramanyam inaugurated it at Ravindra
Bharati, the city's most preferred auditorium. The
highlight of the evening was a concert by APSO singers.
The speciality of the programme being that the songs rendered
were light classical, folk or devotional. Popular film
songs were carefully kept unsung.
With
such commitment to promote light classical, devotional
and folk music and with such determination to keep off
film music, APSO's task was arduous. But yet, APSO never
looked back. It has held several musical evenings which
won wide acclaim from true music lovers. Through such
programmes APSO basically provides a platform for amateur
and professional singers to perform before discerning
listeners. Many a times their singing has thrown open
good opportunities for the APSO members. Like, lending
singing voice for films, television, radio-ads and stage
shows.
Through these sessions APSO is also building a strong
fraternity of singers. Right from amateurs to the professionals.
And for the amateurs it is a never-before opportunity
to sing with the accomplished and veteran singers. Over
the years APSO has broadened its base to include in the
fold of its membership all those who are in one way or
the other connected with the music world.
General Secretary
K.S.R. Moorthy says, "Apart from the singers,
we also have 40 music directors and composers as our members.
This is helpful for both, the budding as well as the professional
singers, to get good opportunities to develop their career".
As for the future, APSO plans to start an Audio
Cassette division. This would help taking their music
far and wide. Help building up an audience that relishes
good and clean music. Music, rooted to the soil. Music,
truly Indian.
That is what APSO members are striving to achieve. Perhaps
this striving together by APSO singers is best reflected
when, at the end of each of their programmes, the entire
lot of the members present, numbering over hundred and
fifty, huddle on the stage and sing the signing off melody
in a harmonious and melodious chorus.
