One,
whose heart is filled with music, is sure to get drawn
towards Palagummi Viswanadham.
As a Veena - player and Music director he has left
indelible imprints on the literary scene (Bhava Kavita
Yugam) as well as light music (Lalita Sangeetam).
At 82, Palagummi Viswanadham is still active and is enthusiastically
creating awe inspiring music. He is also a a gifted lyrist,
a melliflous singer, a talented writer and a versatile
producer of operas and ballets. Palagummi has evolved
a distinct style of his own. Dedicated life long to music
he uses lots of Sanskrit quotations in his ever day conversation
many of which reflect the essence of music.
His music always transports music lovers
to a world of varying moods. Some of the lullabies, like
Uyyala Jampala composed by him have lulled
three generations of babies to sleep. Popular songs like
"Ammadonga... Ninnu choodakunte..e.. Naku benga...."
(sung by Vedavati Prabhakar), "Padamule Chaloo...Raama...",
and "Narayana Narayana...Allah...Allah (sung
by Chittaranjan and .......)." are from
the realm of Palagummi's creations. His book of songs
titled "Amma Donga", has won him many laurels
and several admirers. Palagummi has composed music and
directed the production of many a private albums of devotional
songs. Ramadasu Keertanaalu brought out
by the Bhakta Ramdas Project, Khammam is
the major work recently done by Palagummi. S.P.Bala
Subramanyam and Janaki have lent their voices
to the songs. Krishna Sastri Geya Khadambham,
Gandhiji-Swatantrya Samara Geyalu, Gana
Madhuri, and his very own Melodies
of Palagummi are some more of his well received light-music
albums.
When asked about the greatness of music, a word-of-mouth
'Sruthirh-mathaha..Layaha-pithaha' (
Sruthi is as like as mother and Laya is as like as father)
came from Palagummi.

Palagummi Viswanadham was born on June 1, 1919 in
Tirupathi Puram, a village in West Godavari
District. He learned Karnatak classical vocal musicfrom
Marla Suryanarayana Murthy and Dr. S. Ramanathan.
In fact he is the first disciple in Veena of Emani
Sankara Sastri. Interestingly Palgummi's career started
with Uday Shankar's film 'Kalpana'.
Later, he worked with Emani Sankara Sastri in Gemini
Studios at Madras as Assistant Music Director.
Palagummi joined All India Radio (AIR), Hyderabad
in the year 1955. He was in charge of Light Music as a
Producer till his retirement in 1979. In his two and half
decades service, he created a wide variety of programmes.
The popular music programme 'Rasatarangam'
was conceived by Palagummi. Through this programme he
brought before the listening public a number of songs
penned by great poets of the past and the present. Many
musical plays of eminent writers were also produced by
him and broadcast. His Ballet titled 'Bhama Vilapam'
on the dowry deaths written for Kuchipudi dance
has delighted music lovers. 
Palagummi was honoured by the Andhra Pradesh Sangeeta
Academy in the year 1983 and conferred the title 'Kala
Praveena'. He received the prestigious Nandi Award
for best Music Director for Tele Vision Film 'Raja
Sekhara Chitra'. He was a member of the Jury for the
Nandi Film Awards of A. P. Government in the years 1981,
1993 and 1997. At present he is the member of the Governing
body for South Central Zone Cultural Centre.
Palagummi is still striving to popularise light music.
He has established an organisation 'Nada vinodini'
that brings together various generations together.Yes,
a generation bonded with common love for music and respect
and regard for Palagumi Viswanadham. As actively as he
is in 20's.
