After
years of being in the wilderness, the entire Creedence
Clearwater Revival - popularly referred to as CCR
- catalogue finally finds itself in India through an exclusive
licensing arrangement between the US-based Fantasy
Records and Virgin Records (India).
"In 1968, I always used to say that I wanted
to make records they would play on the radio in ten years"
- John Fogerty, former leader of Creedence Clearwater
Revival.
...In retrospect, John Fogerty got all he wished for more.
More than three decades later, CCR's songs, "Proud
Mary", "Bad Moon Rising", Born On The Bayou",
and "Green River", among others,
endure as timeless rock classics.
This
legendary four-member band consisted of John Fogerty,
Tom Fogerty, Doug "Cosmo" Clifford, and
Stu Cook. The Fogerty brothers were born and raised
in Berkley, California, where John studied piano
and, at the age of 12, got his first guitar. John met
Cook and Clifford at El Cerrito Junior High and they spent
much of their time practising in the Fogerty garage. The
band performed at local dances as Tommy Fogerty &
The Blue Velvets.
In 1964, the quartet signed to the San Fransisco-based
Fantasy Records, where Tom had been working as a packing
and shipping clerk. The label renamed them as 'The
Golliwogs". As The Golliwogs, they recorded seven
singles that went largely unheard by the general public.
Finally, the label re-released the last of the Golliwogs
singles, "Portville", under a new name of the
band's own choosing: "Creeedence Clearwater Revival".
The rest, as they say, is history
