Despite
the invasion of cable television channels, there are
many people who found solace in watching live performances
of music, dance and drama after the hectic work schedules.
Where do such people go, to enjoy cultural programmes
in the twin cities? Either to Ravindra Bharati
or Thyagaraya Gana Sabha, which bustle with cultural
activities every day.
Till
the 1970s, Ravindra Bharati was the only auditorium
available for government and private cultural functions
in the twin cities. As government manages the auditorium,
naturally the government departments got priority over
private people in booking the hall. With the growing
city and population, the necessity of having another
auditorium like Ravindira Bharati, was felt by the cultural
organisations and regular audience as well. This necessity
led to the construction of the Thyagaraya Gana Sabha,
which became one of the prestigious auditoriums of the
city.
You
would be surprised know that this auditorium was built
by a group of people and cultural organisations without
taking government's help. About 450 people, who were
engaged in cultural activities came together and formed
an association in the name of 'Thyagaraya Gana Sabha'.
They took a piece of land on lease from People's Co-operative
Housing Society, Chikkadapally and started construction
of the auditorium with their own contributions. The
auditorium was ready with all facilities by 1977. Since
then it hosted several cultural programmes and became
launch pad for many Bharata Natyam and Kuchipudi
dancers. Thyagaraya Gana Sabha, celebrated its Silver
Jubilee in 1992. A committee elected by the members
of 'Sabha', manages the auditorium. At present there
are about thousand life members and 800 members in the
'Sabha'.
According
some members of the 'Sabha', this auditorium is a tribute
to the great saint composer and singer Thyagaraju.
A statue of Thyagaraju was installed in the auditorium
premises in 1985. Since then, the place became a temple
for the dancers and musicians. The 'Sabha', celebrates
'Thyagaraya Aradhanotsavalu', every year on the
occasion of his birthday.
The auditorium has two halls - main and mini. The seating
capacity of the main hall is 700 and it is centrally
air-conditioned. The stage is equipped with floodlights
and automatic curtains. Apart from the cultural programmes
the auditorium can be hired for the wedding ceremonies
too.
