It
was an evening that South Indian music lovers will cherish
for quite some time. The concert by KJ Yesudas
that was rescheduled due to torrential rains took place
on December 2. The venue, St Mary's School, Secunderabad
was packed with music lovers who had come to witness
a performance of film music by Dr K J Yesudas. The veteran
who has more than 30,000 songs to his credit, started
off with devotional songs in four languages (Malayalam,
Telugu, Hindi, Telugu) before moving onto film music.
Popular Malayalam playback singer Rajalakshmi Tilak
accompanied him and the duo shifted between all the
southern hits effortlessly.
The
enthusiastic gathering lapped up very bit of all time
hits like Gori tera gaon bada pyara (Chitchor)
and Jaane mann (Choti Si Baat) to recent hits
like Pachani Chilakalu from Bharateeyudu. Yesudas
was in great from as he recreated the magic of 70s hits
like Devude ichadu veedhi okati. The fast paced
north Kerala folk song called the Mapillai song
mostly sung in the Muslim community settled in Kerala
was the highlight of the evening.
The
concert lasted well over three hours. The evening was
supposed to mark the first performance by Yesudas with
his son Vijay Yesudas. Vijay who was travelling to US
could not make it to the performance. The concert came
to a close with the rendition of Saranam Ayyappa with
divinity that none other than Yesudas can match.
Dr
Yesudas' voice remains untarnished by the rigours of
time. The advent of technology has not destroyed the
quality of his voice, or his attitude to music. His
virtuosity is reflected in the fact that he is able
to breathe fresh air into songs that he recorded in
his studio in Florida, by merely listening to track
recordings, without having an inkling of the story of
the film. This, combined with his sheer genius, ensures
that Dr Yesudas still remains an authority on film and
classical music.
