Vivacious,
charismatic, beautiful…. the combination is mind blowing.
A lady at the age of 60 packs in enough energy to put
a 20-year-old to shame. Truly a woman of substance,
that's designer Tutu Taneja for you.
The granddaughter of the late Maharajah of Jind,
Tutu's name is synonymous to block printed ethnic
wear in Hyderabad. Over the last three decades or so,
she has improved and perfected her designs. Actresses,
tourists, rich and middle class women, all seek her
designs.
Operating from a corner of her sprawling mansion in
Banjara Hills, Tutu is involved in every stage
of her creation. Under her discerning eyes, her workers
execute all the printing, dyeing and alterations.
Her blocks range in s tyles
and subject from the swaying trees to the image of Lord
Krishna. The blocks are printed on either cotton
or organdy. The prices (starting at Rs. 550
for a saree) are incredibly reasonable for exclusive
designer wear.
According to her, Hyderabad with its rich culture,
intricate jewellry, and costumes have been a constant
source of inspiration."I used to walk for hours
in the Golconda Fort. The arches, the designs on them
are so beautiful… I could put the same thing in a different
way on my clothes."
Her enormous success is a standing testimony to her
dedication and talent. Indeed it is no exaggeration
to say that Tutu has added value, quality and
character to the fashion scene in Hyderabad.
