The Millennium Indo- French International Cardiology conference
held in Apollo hospitals suggested either laser therapy
or gene therapy for "no option coronary disease".
The
disease among the South Asian population is called so
when the blood vessels are not suitable for intervention
or surgery. South Asians suffer from this disease in their
productive years of 40-45 years, but it strikes the Western
population when they are 60.
Renowned interventional cardiologist from France, Alain
Cribier, who participated in the conference said that
the reasons for early cardiac disease among south Asians
is because of genetics , lipid abnormalities, prevalence
of diabetes, fast changing lifestyle, food habits, and
lack of exercise. This view point is also endorsed by
Dr. P C Rath, Organising Secretary of the conference.
The alternative treatment suggested for no option coronary
disease is laser th erapy.
In this technique channels are made in the left ventricle
of the heart, thereby creating a direct pathway for the
blood to reach the muscles. In South India, this technique
is offered in the city only at the Apollo Hospitals.
Another pioneering technique which will be extensively
used in the years to come is gene therapy, the participants
in the conference feel. Through this therapy, chemical
mediators are introduced, which aid in the proliferation
of vessels, which ultimately bypass the blocked vessels.
The conference also deliberated many interventional cardiac
techniques to deal with coronary artery disease. One such
technique was Mitral Commissurotome, a metallic
device invented a couple of years ago and is now being
adopted by cardiologists across the world. The cost of
the device is not much and as such can be successfully
used in third world countries like India. This was invented
by Prof. Alain Cribier from University of France and Dr.
PC Rath of Apollo hospitals, Hyderabad.
