There
will be always more ways than one to realise our dreams,
but we must be prepared to try them out. That is what
Mr. L. Mallesh did and became a successful optometrician
in the twin cities.
Mr. Mallesh, hailing from backward Telangana region, came
to Hyderabad dreaming of getting a seat in MBBS course.
He appeared for the entrance test twice, but luck did
not favour him. After some time he accidentally met, Mr.
Manohar Lal Kapoor of Deccan Opticals. This
meeting turned the life of Mr. Mallesh. " Mr.
Kapoor advised me to join the optometry diploma course
offered at Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital. I followed
his words and successfully completed the course. Later
I did my Fellowship of Contact Lens (FCLI) in Delhi.
After finishing my fellowship I came back to Hyderabad.
Initially, I worked for major hospitals like Andhra
Mahila Sabha, Mahavir Hospital. While I was working
for these hospitals, I started my own practice in a small
way in the name of Sunil Opticians at Isamaiah
Bazaar, near Kothi. I used to go to my clinic
in the evening," explained Mr. Mallesh. As
demand increased, I upgraded my clinic by adding an eye
care products showroom," said Mallesh. This upgradation
increased the number of clients tremendously. As a result
some of his customers started seeking special appointment
to save their time. To cater to this new demand he started
a clinic at his residence, at Sai Babanagar on
Shivam Road.
In
the year 2000, Mr. Mallesh floated 'Vision Point Pvt
Ltd' to set up one stop shop for eye care throughout
the country. 'Global Vision', the first venture
of the Vision Point was started at Secunderabad, which
is now catering to more than 4000 clients. Global Vision
is a one stop shop for all eye care products. From ordinary
spectacles to latest world class frames and bifocal lenses
to all eye care products are available at the shop. The
Low Vision Aids Centre of Global Vision is the only
centre in the twin cities that takes care of patients
with Diabetic Retinopathy and other problems.
"My
main emphasis is on upgradation of my professional skills
and providing latest facilities at my eye care centres.
I use an auto refracto meter, which gives out the details
of the eyesight defects in 30 seconds. With this equipment,
I would be able to treat those patients, who have IOL
and those with eye lens implants. I have installed digital
frame selector at both of my clinics. This equipment provides
12 options for choosing a frame. All that the client needs
to do is to sit in front of a video camera, wearing different
kinds of spectacle frames. The photograph is scanned into
a computer. The client can see, on the computer, how he
looks if he wears any of the selected frames. The computer
also provides different options like how a person looks
if he wears photo grey or photo brown glasses and different
coloured contact lenses. I do not charge extra money for
using all these modern facilities," said Mr.
Mallesh.
Besides
introducing new and modern equipment, Mr. Mallesh encourages
his clients to use latest eye products. Accordingly, he
introduced various schemes for his clients. "
Till now I offered more than 600 pairs of contact lenses
for free trials to my patients. I have also started the
Planned Replacement Programme' (PRP) facility for the
contact lens users. Under this programme, the member of
PRP is entitled to purchase second pair of contact lenses
for Rs. 600 only. The actual cost of these contact lenses
is Rs. 1200. I am the only in Hyderabad to use PRP,"
explained Mallesh.
After L.V. Prasad Eye Institute, Mr. Mallesh is
the first optometrician to computerise clients data base.
He has stored complete information about 7,500 clients.
" Based on the computerised records, I send birthday
cards to clients. This helps to recall the attention of
the clients. I send letters as and when I add new equipment
to my clinic," said Mr. Mallesh. He uses his
clients information system to remind his customers of
their next due date of visiting or change of leneses.
This periodic communication helps him not only in retaining
the existing clients, but also helps to increase business.
Famous
skin specialist Dr. Aurangabadkar, well known General
Physician Dr. Damodar Menon and IAS officer Deva
Sena are some of the esteemed clients of Mr. Mallesh.
He is satisfied with his success and plans to offer his
services to the people of Vijayawada and Vishkapatnam
and other metropolitan cities in India, through the Vision
Point Pvt Ltd.
Both his patients and the eyecare product companies acknowledge
his efforts in providing efficient eye care to his clients.
Recognising his efforts Bausch & Lomb awarded
him the 'Best Practice Management Award' in A.P.
He recieved the same award four times since 1997.
