The Central Research Institute of Unani Medicine (CRIUM)
of  Hyderabad
is carrying an outstanding research in Unani medicine,
the age-old traditional system of medicine. The CRIUM
is a well-known Unani medicine Research and Training Institute
in the country. Established in December 1971, with the
objective of undertaking scientific research on various
aspects of Unani system of medicine with the sophisticated
technology. The Institute has evolved new Unani formulations
of proven efficacy and safety for the treatment of various
disorders.
 The
Institute has undertaken several therapeutical studies.
These include six drugs for Bars (vitilligo), two
for Iltehab-e- Tajaweef-e-Af (Sinusitis), six for
Iltehab-e-Kabid (infectious hepatitis), two for
Sailan-ur-Rahem (leucorrhoes), one for Qarah-e-Asna
Ashari (duodenal ulcer), one for Kasrat-e-Shahmuddam
(hyper lipidemia) and one for Hasatul Kuliya wa
Masana (urolithiasis). The mobile clinical component
of the Institute is serving to people living in slums
as the potential source of health care.
Studies on the theory of Akhlat (humors),
which forms the basis of Unani Medicine, has also been
undertaken with a view to test the concept scientifically.
An attempt is being made to evolve physico-chemical standards
for a single and compound Unani drugs under its drug standardisation
research programme. It also initiated the methods of manufacturing
various Unani formulations. 
The researchers engaged in survey and cultivation of medicinal
plants at the Institute have so far explored 15 forest
divisions. Number of plant specimens and folk medicinal
claims have been collected and preserved. Experimental
cultivation of some important Unani plants has also been
successfully undertaken at the herb garden in the Institute's
premises.
Thanks to CRIUM, which is striving its best to keep the
fame of India as the country having largest number
of health care, educational and research institutions
on Unani medicine in the world.
