If artists are the gods of their creation, then the
art galleries are the temples. There are a number of
art galleries in the city, some of which have been set
up by the artists themselves. Within the silent and
austere interiors one can commune with various forms
of artistic expressions, which is not only a treat to
the eye, but also to the mind.
Lakshana
Art Gallery
From picture frames to the picture - that's how far
this art gallery has travelled. Started on 24th April
2000, the Lakshana Art Gallery is the first such
venture initiated by the Lakshana Picture Frames,
a Chennai based company.
Two decades of close interaction with art, and founders
Madhu and Geetha have moved from merely
framing the picture to promoting it. Their purpose is
to showcase works of contemporary art, to generate discussion
on the subject and to use multi-media to generate greater
interest.
Since its inception, the gallery has held three exhibitions,
showcasing nearly 60 paintings each time, of many upcoming
artists. And they plan to take it further with two to
three shows every month!
The cherry on the icing is the most ambitious of their
dreams of bringing art back to the mainstream, despite
the threat of competion from the other more popular
mass media.

Surya Gallery
In an era, where artistic expression is stifled by
commercialism, the Surya Gallery provides a new
lease of life to a number of artists. The
gallery was set up by renowned artist Surya Prakash
in 1993, for precisely this purpose, to escape the
"trappings of a commercial gallery". This was
reflected right in its very first show, when it displayed
the works of Manu Parekh, Sunil Das and others
who were then unknown to Hyderabad.
Today it houses the contemporary works of artists from
all over India. At the same time, one can find the works
of Hyderabad's very own Surya Prakash, Vaikuntam,
and DLN Reddy. The gallery holds both one-man
shows as well as group shows of artists. These collections
exhibit styles diverse, both in form and content.
To increase art consciousness Surya Gallery plans to
organise Art Workshops and Slide shows.
Seven years since its inception, this unpretentious
gallery has made an invaluable contribu tion
to the art and culture of this city.

Minaaz
Art Gallery
If you're looking for the works of young and deligent
artists, the Minaaz Art Gallery is the place
to look for them. Started five years ago by artist Shahnaz
Armi, this gallery displays the works of over 30
artists and sculptors. The displays are revamped every
fortnight as new collections are brought in.
Located in the basement of the Banjara Petals, the
gallery is spread over 2000 square feet. The displays
include a range of styles from the colourful depiction
of the Telangana women by renowned artist T.
Vaikuntam, to more experimental styles of artist
Fawad Tamkanat, and the abstract thoughtful collection
by L.N.V. Srinivas.
Apart from selling art, Ms Armi also hopes to create
awareness and generate interest in these artistic works.
This, she hopes to achieve by regularly hosting individual
and group shows.
The Deccan Chronicle best sums up the work of this
gallery: ' Minaaz Art Gallery with good lighting
