SPLASH
OF GOOD FUN
Take a dip in the swimming pool of the Municipal Corporation
of Hyderabad (MCH) to parry the torment of the blazing
Hyderabadi Sun. The MCH has been successfully maintaining
this world-class pool for the past 30 years. Located in
the heart of the Twin Cities near Paradise, the B. V.
Guru Moorthy Swimming Pool facing the Gymkhana Grounds
is spread over two and a half acres.
The 'big pool' is 50 metres long and 20 metres wide, and
another one called 'baby pool' for kids, draw most of
the crowd. Established in 1971, the centre was inaugurated
by the then Municipal Commissioner of Hyderabad, C N Sastri.
There are twenty-five staff members including 15 trained
coaches who conduct swimming lessons for children and
adults. G Umesh, Chief coach and Person In-Charge has
taken it as a challenge to improve the standards of this
swimming pool.
Thanks to his efforts, two of the three students who participated
at the Asia Pacific Championships won medals. Chitra Raj
and Santhosh Chari have both won bronze medals in 1994
and 1999 respectively. The centre also conducts Karate
classes and has a gymnasium. Visitors can also play carom.
A skating and Boxing Ring will be inaugurated soon. Every
year, the MCH organises a 'One month Summer Camp' here.
