--------------- A Politician who means business
From The Business Person of the Year in 1998
to The IT Man of the Year in 1999 and from the
IT Indian of the Millennium to The South Asian
of the Year, Nara Chandrababu Naidu, the Chief Minister
of Andhra Pradesh representing 70 million people is
undoubtedly the CEO of Andhra Pradesh.
Born to an agriculturist couple N K Naidu and
Ammanamma, on April 20, 1950, in Naravaripalle
of Chittoor district, Chandrababu Naidu finished
his graduation and post-graduation in Economics from
Sri Venkateshwara Arts College, Tirupati. Even
when in college, he held various positions in the Students'
Union and organised several social activities, including
one for the victims of the 1977 cyclone.
While studying for his Ph.D in Economics, he took
to politics and in 1978, got elected to the Andhra
Pradesh Legislative Assembly. From 1980-83, he held
various portfolios in the Congress government. In 1985,
he was chosen for the post of the Secretary of the Telugu
Desam Party and got elected to the State Legislature
in 1989 and 1994.
In 1995 there was an expansion in the party and Chandrababu
was unanimously elected as the Chief Minister of Andhra
Pradesh. He has continued for a second term from October
1999.
Adopting a modern outlook and a style of functioning
akin to the Chief Executive Officer, using modern tools
like IT and blueprinting dreams like Vision 2020,
Chandrababu Naidu quickly set himself apart from
the rest. The start he gave to develop information technology
has created a niche for Hyderabad on the global map.
To involve people in implementing government policies,
he has developed schemes like the Janma Bhoomi and
Social Auditing and has created self-help groups
like Watershed Development, the Village Health
and the Village Education Committees. He
has improved the government's functioning by adopting
the twin-pronged approach of transforming and informing.
He has introduced a series of Dial your CM programmes
where the citizens get an opportunity to address their
grievances to none other than Naidu himself. He is also
responsible for establishing a state-wide communication
area network and teleconferencing. He monitors and ushers
administrative reforms with the help of these modern
technologies.
Following the national policy, he has boldly reformed
various sectors, including power. The dynamism and the
single-mindedness that he exhibits in these programmes
is the reason for Andhra Pradesh being globally recognised
as a model for bringing in reforms.
And, understandably, Nara Chandrababu Naidu is hailed
the world over as a symbol of reforms. Indeed, here
is a politician who means business!
