A crowned literateur
As a poet, Dr C Narayana Reddy has won a distinction.
He is adored by the masses the lyrics penned by him
for Telugu films. He is crowned with India's highest
literary award, Jnanapeeth, for his creations
in classical poetry.
Born on July 29 1931, in Hanumajipet village
of Karimnagar district, Narayana Reddy did his
MA and obtained a PhD from the Osmania University
and began teaching. With his critical acumen, incisive
insight and poetic sensitivity, he was a very famous
with his students. Besides teaching, he also concentrated
on writing - poems, lyrics, literary criticism and analysis,
research papers, essays and plays.
In the five decades of his writing career, Dr C Narayana
Reddy, or Cinare as he is popularly known, has brought
out nearly 70 publications. His research work on modern
Telugu Poetry assessing the influence of tradition
and experiments on it, published in 1967, has earned
him high acclaim.
Dr. Narayana Reddy received several prestigious awards
like the Soviet Land Nehru Award, Bharatiya Bhasha
Parishad Award, Raja-Lakshmi Award, Kumaran Asan Award
besides the Jnanapeeth Award. He was also conferred
with honorary D.Litt. by Meerut University, honorary
doctorates by Andhra, Nagarjuna and Kakatiya
Universities, and Padmashri and Padmabhushan
honours by the Government of India.
Cinare's personality has many other facets. He is a
good administrator and an excellent orator and has held
high positions in academic as well as administrative
fields such as Chairman, AP Official Language Commission,
Vice-Chancellor, Dr B R Ambedkar Open University and
Vice-Chancellor, Potti Sriramulu Telugu University.
Dr Reddy's concern for the human race, his sensitivity,
and his undying belief in the goodness of men are reflected
in the Jnanapeeth award winning social epic, Vishwambhara,
and his recent 100-page poem Matti-Manishi-Akasam.
With natural charm, inherent grace, and engaging oratory
skills, Dr Cinare is much sought after for gracing public
functions. He obliges and lends any occasion a sense
of dignity that is an integral part of his multifaceted
personality.
