The Cardiology Division of Care Hospital is planning
to take up a long- term, randomised prospective study
of interventions in peripheral vascular disease in association
with two famous interventional cardiologists from abroad.
Dr Amor Max, an authority on interventions in peripheral
vascular disease from the Polyclinique in Essey-les-Nancy,
France, and Dr Zoltan Turi, Professor of Medicine
and Director of the Interventional Programmme at the
University of California, San Diego are to participate
in it.
This study aims at looking in to all aspects of interventions,
including the long-term outcomes, the efficacy of various
implants and techniques in use now and strategies to
improve upon them.As the first step, the hospital has
started conducting a peripheral vascular intervention
workshops during which patients with blocks in carotid,
renal and iliac arteries and aortic, lesions are treated
without surgery using percutaneous balloon angioplasty
and stenting.
Dr Soma Raju, Chief of Cardiology, Care Hospital,
told that a number of patients who have coronary artery
disease or long-standing diabetes with vascular complications
also have plaque buildup in the carotid artery that
supplies the brain and renal arteries that supply the
kidneys. This leads to impaired blood flow to the respective
organs.
The visiting cardiologists and the hospital team are
working on using non-surgical techniques in the treatment
of peripheral vascular disease.
