A nightingale at home
Accomplished
vocalist, nationally acclaimed exponent of the Gwalior
gharana, vocalist Malini Rajurkar chooses to
be known as a housewife.
Malini was born into an orthodox but music-loving family
of Ajmer. Her flair for music led to her being
introduced to classical music. Predictably her Honours
Bachelor's Degree in Arts from the University of
Rajasthan was coupled with a degree of Sangeet
Nipun from the College of Music, Ajmer.
Her marriage into the Rajurkar family, led to
her illustrious father-in-law Pandit Govind Rao Rajurkar
recognising her talent and taking her under his
tutelage. Malini's singing began to improve and her
popularity increased by leaps and bounds. Her family
encouraged her to perform in concerts even as she continued
to perform her duties as a devoted daughter-in-law and
a good wife.
Malini's trained voice began to exude confidence. Her
precise tone, highly creative use of taans, impeccable
taal, purity of the grammar in music and imaginative
content took her to the forefront in the rendering of
khayal, tappa and tarana. Since 1964 she
has r endered
over a thousand concerts and participated in many music
festivals.
All India Radio and Doordarshan have
accorded her top ranking in their list of artistes and
have invited her several times to sing in the Radio
Sangeet Sammelan and the National Programme of
Music. She has performed world over, USA, Canada,
the UK and in the Middle East and has to her credit
the release of more than 10 audiocassettes.
In spite of these honours and achievements, Malini
Rajurkar continues to be a humble housewife and credits
her success to her family's love for music.
