Priceless almanacs, Valuable Compiler
Nearly
26 years (1950-76) of Buddiga Subbarayan's life
was spent in compiling, correcting and editing the 16-volume
Vignana Sarvaswamu, the first ever Telugu Encyclopaedia.
A Consultant, Literacy House, Andhra Mahila Sabha,
he also brought out Bala Vignana Sarvaswamu,
the first illustrated children's Encyclopaedia in
Telugu.
Born on May 2, 1928, in Narsapur of West
Godavari district, this unassuming compiler has
several significant achievements to his credit. From
1976-88, he was the Secretary, AP Balala Akademi,
a State government society devoted to developing
children's literature, and Director, State Jawahar
Bal Bhavan from 1983-86.
During
this period he produced over a hundred low-priced but
quality children's books. Besides, he also brought out
Bala Chandrika, a children's monthly magazine
that was distributed to 40,000 schools month after month
for nine years. He started projects like Prati
Badiki Baala Saraswati Peetham, an innovative
scheme that built a library in every primary school
in the State. The World Expo-1984 and The
United Nations - A Mini Expo-1985, culminated
in associating hundreds of schools for educative and
entertaining projects. An advocate of cultural literacy,
Subbarayan has revived and brought out Surabhi
- Pedda Bala Siksha, a unique feature of Telugu
culture. He has several ongoing projects on hand like
rural marketing of children's books, use of puppetry
in schools and promoting use of computers in Telugu.
Buddiga Subbarayan is a man with a vision of a profound
literary world for India. His book, Uttama Nayakatvam
and the compiltaion of Bharatiya Namavali, a dictionary
of Indian studies based on the concept of cultural literacy
are testimonials of his added contribution to literature.
