Inspired by the
overwhelming response to the Naval Show conducted
at the Hussain Sagar lake a few weeks ago,
the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Department, came
out with an innovative project Heritage Walks.
Intended to promote tourism in the state, the programme
was launched on September 27 to coincide
with the World Tourism Day.
The 'Heritage Walks' take the tourists through
lanes and bylanes of the old city of Hyderabad
and gives them a finer glimpse of the legacy
of the Nizam rulers. The three and a half
kilometer walk starts from the office of the old
Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad and
culminates at Charminar. The trip covers
more than 20 historical places and monuments like
Badshahi Ashur Khana, Azha Khana-e-Zahra, Darulshafa,
Purani Haveli, Mir-Alam Mandi, Diwan Dewdi, Burkha
Bazar, Pathargatti, Char Kaman and Lad
Bazaar.
Specially
trained guides were accompanying the participants
to give them the background and the details of
the respective places. As the trip was on foot,
the participants interacted with the local people.
In itself, an added charm. Conducted on every
Sunday, the Walks are initially planned for eight
weeks. There are indications that they may become
a regular feature. The trips are free and open
to all.
